Little Abstract Drawings

I've been mulling over whether or not I'd post my small abstract drawings; but hell, if I had no shame in posting the glitter paintings then why not.

The drawings are usually a mix of different drawing materials: conte, watercolor crayon, colored pencil, graphite, watercolors, ink pencils, etc. They are generally done quickly and without expectation -- not quite an automatic drawing, but close. Simple little drawings. I like that.

Experimenting with Frames

: : Viewing them framed is such a different experience, me thinks. Every once in awhile I like to experiment with virtual frames to see the pieces in a new way. Interesting exercise.

At this point, I'm liking the idea of a white, simple frame with a contemporary feel. The frame samples shown are not quite exact but give me a general idea.

Clyfford Still Museum Opens Today in Denver

The long-awaited Clyfford Still Museum opens in Denver today. I'm so excited to have one of my own artistic inspirations so close at hand. I will be haunting the halls of that museum, alrighty!

Mr. Still infamously kept most of his considerable output of work from public eyes until now, so the museum will have over 2400 works of his to exhibit. This is a big day for Denver and an incredible opportunity for us art lovers everywhere to see amazing art from a master.

:: The red paper in the last few collages came from a hardcover copy of Jane Eyre I found in a second hand book store in NW Denver.

:: Someone had written, "January 17, 1963, mild weather" at the top of the page. Nothing about Jane Eyre is 'mild weather' so the inscription intrigued me. Did the writer refer to the weather in the Mile High City all those years ago, or did the book migrate to Denver in the course of its life from elsewhere and describe the weather (or affairs of the heart) there? Literal or figurative? Who knows. I like the mystery. Jane would approve, me thinks.

These little notations keep me honest. They are somewhat compulsive as I need to make things -- almost addictively. Sometimes, I have to force myself to post them them as I recognize that they are perhaps, not great art. That's okay.

Over the years, I've worked hard to make good paintings, market them professionally, get that pat on the head through sales and increasing recognition. That has happened and I am delighted -- but I lost something of myself along the way.

Did you know that I have quite the wicked (raunchy at times) sense of humor? No? Did you know that I'm almost paralyzed by shyness and fear of rejection at art shows and it takes every ounce of my being to show up at one? No? Does anyone know how passionate I am about tiny poetry; making the perfect borscht; snow? The answer will be, almost universally, no. Why?

It's my fault. I became too entangled in worrying about how professional/accomplished/calm, cool and collected/perfectperfectperfect I appeared to my art peers and I forgot to be me. All marketing facade, very little of Nicole (except in the paintings themselves). I wanted to be accepted, liked, respected for my professionalism. Bleh. Those are fine things to attain, but not at the expense of who I am...not to just fit in. The cost of that pursuit made me less authentically ME! Enough.

That's why these little collage experiments and other works on paper I've been doing recently are so important. I can't be too precious about them, but more importantly, I can't be too precious about me. What a relief.

Like the aspens that surround me here in Colorado, I've shed leaves down to bare branches and intend to survive the winter.

Check out the wee art pieces at Rochester Contemporary Art Center!

Every year they hold a unique fundraiser that invites artists from all over the world to create 6" x 6" pieces of art for $20 each -- the funds assist the art center to continue supporting contemporary art in their area. I donated 6 collage pieces for this year's fundraiser (all of them are sold).

It's fascinating to see the variety of artwork and seriously, $20? A steal. I bought the two above.

What's intriguing is that the buyer doesn't know who the artist is until the names are revealed after the purchase. Fun! (Update: The artist is Angel Rodriguez. Can't find a website so can't link. Angel, love your work!)
